Definition and Usage

The <audio> tag defines sound, such as music or other audio streams.


Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML 5

The <audio> tag is new in HTML 5.


Tips and Notes

Tip: You can write text inside the start and end audio tags, to show older browser that they do not support this tag.

Attribute Value Description
autoplayNew autoplay If present, the audio will start playing as soon as it is ready.
controlsNew controls If present, controls will be displayed, such as a play button.
loopNew loop If present, the audio will start over again, every time it is finished.
preloadNew auto
metadata
none
Specifies if the audio should be loaded when the page loads, or not. Ignored if autoplay is present.
srcNew url Defines the URL of the audio to play

The <audio> tag also supports the Standard Attributes in HTML 5.


Event Attributes

The <audio> tag also supports the Event Attributes in HTML 5.
